What is SEO ?
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a process using several techniques to optimize your website in terms of search engine in order to get your website quickly categorized in correct order by search engine.
So, it doesn't deal with search engine placement ?
A good SEO techniques applied to your website could probably place your website in desired positions (top 10 or first page on Google, Yahoo, MSN). However, this depends on how many competing websites, targeted keywords and targeted traffic.
Does the SEO algorithm crawl/search embedded codes?
I would interpret your questions into the following answers :
- HTML
If it's an embedded codes (e.g include files for javascript files, perl, etc), the answer is NO. Other normal HTML is getting crawled.
- Flash
There's no way of the crawler to look up the flash. That's why if you're doing a good SEO, you don't even look at Flash components. Keep in mind that SEO mostly relies on text/content and good linking strategies.
OK, I want to learn SEO now. Is it difficult ? What are the required skills ?
SEO is easy, at least in its principals. What goes difficult is more to maintain the quality of your website to get your visitors getting useful information. Skills required is basic HTML (knowing all META, H1, H2, H3 tags), content writing, and good communication.
What the hell is NgaduTrafik 2007 ?
NgaduTrafik 2007 is an SEO contest/battle initiated by several SEO experts and webmasters. The contest start from 22 May – 22 July 2007. The rule is simple : Top 10 contestants' website for Google, Yahoo, MSN for the keyword 'ngadutrafik 2007' (without quotes). For each search engine, the highest score is 10 given to the top website and down sequentially to the 10th website.
I don't need SEO for my website. It's not important,isn't it ?
It depends on how you want your website to be. If it's just a personal blog and you really don't care whether it has good position or not, then it's not really important. If it's a business website where you got most of your sales, then it's really important.
Page Views, Hits, Visit, Unique. What creatures are they, I am getting confused ?
Confused ? Let's make above definitions simple.
Let's say that you make an HTML page, and upload it to your webserver . The page contains 4 images.
- I visit your page for the first time. It counts as 1 visit, 1 page view, 1 hits, 1 unique.
- Then I refresh the page (using the refresh button). Your counts now is still 1 visit and 1 unique, but you got 2 page views and 2 hits.
- I close the browser or type a new URL. 10 minutes later, I revisit your page. Your count now is still 1 unique, but you got 2 visits, 3 page views, and 3 hits.
If I visit again your page some other time in the day, the unique is still count 1.
Visit is the first time user open the website or page. Visit doesn't count if user stays in the page. If he moved to another websites, and back to your website again, then it's a new visit.
Unique is a visit to your page from an unique IP address in one day. So your page can have 20 visits or more from one IP address, but unique counts only 1.
Hits and Page Views are actually the same, except hits can be associated to object rather than file (in above examples. the hits to your images file is 3x3 = 9 hits).
All above website metrics can be used as benchmarking tools, but Unique and Visits weight more in my opinion.
What is PR ? Public Relations ? Is it so worth ?
Hmm..bringing relation PR (Page Rank) and Public relations is good, and I can say that PR (Page Rank) is also about PR (Public Relations). PR can only achieve using strategic and good link building (Read article for more technical view of PR : Page Rank, Who Ranks Who ? : )
Gaining good link building surely needs good public relations : how you communicate with other webmasters, develop your website content to a certain level that can be trusted and valuable to others, develop and extent your network.
So yes, PR does need PR :)
